April 23, 2004 -

*Bang is on board

Only a few days after agreeing to become the coordinator of the Crookston Vitality Project in mid-March of this year, Carrie Bang took an extended trip to Montana to visit family. She didn’t return to Crookston until after Easter.

*CTA furthers the tennis cause
There was a fairly ambitious agenda when approximately 35 people gathered at the Northland Inn Saturday morning, Nov. 1 (2003) to hear all about the Crookston Vitality Project and also to offer some insights into projects they were involved in.

*Johnson: CVP must make consistent changes
Although the Crookston Vitality Project committee has never operated under a very formal arrangement…no Robert’s Rules of Order, no structured hierarchy, with officers, etc., Joy Johnson has long been considered the co-chair of the group, along with Kari Thompson, executive director of the Crookston Development Authority.

*Knotek: CVP could play a big role in keeping local fine arts initiatives going strong
Dale Knotek was invited to the Nov. 1 (2003) Crookston Vitality Project retreat at the Northland Inn largely because of his work over the years with Wellness Works to promote healthy living. But Knotek is also a huge proponent of promoting the fine arts in the community, and he spent as much time at that retreat talking about music, theater and dance as he did healthy lifestyles.

*Healthy Living, Vitality a nice fit, Knotek believes
So, does a community need a healthy, active citizenry in order to be vital? Dale Knotek things so, and that’s why he’s such a big believer, and is so heavily involved, in the community’s Wellness Works program.

*Valdez: Involve everyone in CVP
Liz Valdez was intrigued when she was invited to a Nov. 1 retreat at the Northland Inn to hear about something called the Crookston Vitality Project. As someone who has worked with young artists through the Fresh Voices initiative and spent years advocating for Hispanics and other under-served facets of Crookston’s population, Valdez wanted to hear what this Vitality thing was all about.

*Group ponders new sports facility
Craig Morgan wants to make one thing perfectly clear: There is no active, formal movement underway to replace the Crookston Civic Arena with a new, multipurpose facility that would provide ample ice space (and time), as well as meet the recreational needs of other groups, such as tennis, in this community.

*Thompson seeks a CVP balance
Of all the people serving on the Crookston Vitality Project committee, Kari Thompson might have the most difficult job. While everyone else has jobs and numerous commitments that leave only about one percent of their time and energy for furthering the Vitality Project, it’s Thompson’s job to see that something productive comes of it.

*To Wolpert, the process is critical
Dan Wolpert, pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Crookston, has at no point in the Crookston Vitality Project process been identified as the leader of the group. But he is very much a leader of the initiative, sometimes grabbing the reins from the get-go, and in other instances taking on leadership roles when no one else on the committee is quick to do so themselves.
